Owning your career (Part 2 of 3)

Awareness … What behaviors are helping you? There are several other initiatives you can take to combat the actions that may hinder you from moving upward in your career.

1. Know what you want – We will cover that in the career vision statement blog.

2. Reach beyond your comfort zone, are you volunteering for projects outside of your work scope?

3. Be willing to look in the mirror, and be introspective; what are your core strengths?

4. Reach out to others, are you making connections, and asking for different perspectives?

5. Are you accountable and do you commit?

6. Address issues as they arise.

7. Make time for YOUR Career.

A 360 Review is a great tool to gather information on what strengths to leverage. It gives you a method to understand why people see you the way they do. It also puts it in perspective, of does matter, and is it relevant to where you want to go in your career?

Most large employers have a 360 Review as part of their performance evaluation programs. If not there are resources available to pull questions from that can give you a fair assessment of perceptions of you. Click this link for example questions. Based on a recent 360 review, please share what strengths you are leveraging, what does an active presence look like, what are the consistent themes? Keep in mind, a 360 review is a snapshot in time. They should be performed every 18 months to two (2) years.

Post in the comments your experience with 360 performance reviews.
