Owning your career (Part 1 of 3)

When it comes to your career, there are three (3) core behaviors you need to have knowledge of focus, awareness, and agility.

Focus – it should move from broad to narrow; know where you want to go. Is your career vision concise?

Awareness – What behaviors are helping you move to where you want to be? What is hindering you?

Agility – Are you using the resources available to you, are you learning all that is needed to move you where you want to go; peers, managers, mentors?

Some of the behaviors you may want to change that could be limiting you.

1. Driven to results – are you only concerned with your results versus helping others?

2. A Doer – Are you so focused on getting every detail right, that you neglect to delegate?

3. Guilt-Ridden – Do you feel like you are not doing enough at work or home?

4. Are you craving of positive feedback – Do you focus on positive feedback versus obsessing over criticism?

5. A safe risk taker – Do you shy away from taking a risk?

6. Highly Motivated – Can you make a distinct difference from merely essential and urgent?

7. Competitive – Is your competitive spirit healthy or leads to career missteps?

8. Passionate about work – Do you magnify work issues, or are you suffering from intense highs and lows?

Quite honestly, I have displayed all of the behaviors during the life of my career. The one I still struggle with is “A Doer.” I am a perfectionist, so I find myself getting bogged down in all the details, which causes stress. One of the practices I have started is to apply the good, better, best strategy. Everything does not have to be the best. Sometimes “good enough” is acceptable.

We will cover focus and career vision statements in a later blog, so let’s focus on awareness and agility.

Post in the comments if you display any of the behaviors above, and are there others you show that are not on my list? Please share them and what you are doing to combat them.
