One of the things that really worked for me and I really concentrated on for my career last year was networking, or better yet, establishing and building relationships. Some of the common themes from articles I have read on this subject are be genuine, bring value, organize, and be open.
I truly believe there is a art to mastering networking. When you are in a room full of people, our goal should be to mingle and talk to more than just one person. I am guilty of this where I find someone I am comfortable with, and that is where I stay. Opportunities are missed for me to connect to others establish a genuine, useful relationship with as many people as possible.
So what is the solution?
When attending a networking event, you should have a strategic plan, go with an intention to meet a certain number of new people. Useful relationships and connections may lead to rare opportunities. Remember what I stated earlier, do not just network, build relationships. When this happens, your network is wider, and there are more people lobbying on your behalf. While building relationships, make sure the benefits are mutual. Making connections involves being direct and bringing value to those around you. Bring your unique perspective however, never be pushy or too aggressive.
Other pointers to building relationships:
1. If your network is nationwide or even globally, follow up with them every six months
2. Treat people the way they want to be treated. Getting to the root of this requires you to dig a little more deeply to understand how someone would like to be treated.
3. Always say “Thank you.
4. Listen. If challenges are communicated, identify the opportunities to collaborate or provide a solution. (Show your value).
5. Have an open mind. Be genuinely interested in what other people are saying.
6. Share your network. If you know that a colleague could benefit from your relationship, initiate the connection between the two.
